History


Apollo Managed Care has been affordable review criteria and clinical guidelines for the medical community since 1997, when they were first published as a series of reference books developed under the guidance of company founder Margaret D. Bischel, MD, FACP. Today, these printed materials have evolved into a comprehensive solution offering online access to more than 2,800 detailed clinical review criteria guidelines and evidence-based benefit interpretations that include benchmarks for commercial, Medicare and Medicaid populations. Apollo continues to be one of the industry’s most widely-trusted resources supporting medically necessary and evidence-based healthcare. Dr. Bischel remains actively involved—ensuring that the medical criteria and clinical guidelines provided remain current and appropriate to today’s evolving standards of care.

Apollo guidelines have been reviewed by hundreds of utilization review/management committees. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois has approved Apollo review criteria guidelines for use by its contracted medicals groups and IPAs. Review criteria and guidelines are continuously updated and made available on a real-time basis via the Apollo Managed Care web portal and the peer reviewed literature is continuously scanned for new information that pertains to Apollo criteria. Dr. Margaret Bischel, MD

Founder and Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Margaret Bischel graduated from the University of Oregon School of Health Sciences, followed by a residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center. She subsequently was a member of the USC medical school faculty for several years. Dr. Bischel is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.


She is a leader in her field who has published over 30 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. While employed as a Medical Director at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL, Dr. Bischel served as President of Medical Staff, then helped establish the Lutheran General Hospital Physicians Association and was appointed to the Lutheran General Health System Board of Directors.


Moving her practice to California, Dr. Bischel founded Apollo Managed Care Consultants to support the efforts of her fellow physicians to improve patient outcomes through managed care. This work led to printed reference materials highlighting medically-accepted best practices and criteria of care. Dr. Bischel continues to be an active, driving force in Apollo's commitment to supporting the needs of the medical community.


Dr. Bischel has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who, publisher of Who’s Who in America. In addition to this recognition for many years, Dr. Bischel was recently selected by the Marquis Research Committee to receive the “Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement award”.


Chukwuka A. Chidi (Chuka)

Chuka brings to Apollo over 16 years of combined experience as a certified public accountant and financial officer. Mr Chidi's background includes strengths such as financial strategy, day to day finance and accounting functions for businesses with annual sales in excess of $100 million. As an executive team member, he participates in expense forecasting, tax planning, and cash management/investment strategies.


Angel Marrero

Legal Counsel

Angel Marrero is an attorney with over 15 years of experience in tax and corporate law, focusing on client matters regarding tax incentives laws, state and local taxation, and corporate structuring. 


Mr. Marrero’s experience includes preparing numerous client publications regarding tax legislation and presenting educational seminars for the firm’s clients, the Puerto Rico Bar Association, and the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Marrero also has ample experience attending committee hearings and drafting memoranda for legislators regarding revisions and reforms to the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code, and other laws in Puerto Rico as a former president of the Tax Affairs Committee of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce.


In 2016, Meditab Group engaged Mr. Marrero as General Counsel, responsible for corporate restructuring in addition to developing and implementing healthcare compliance programs for all of the organizations under the Meditab Group’s family of companies.


Recently, Mr. Marrero joined Apollo Managed Care to provide legal oversight, both internally and for related activity conducted by outside counsel, in addition to assisting with strategic development and implementation.


Mr. Marrero has a B.S. in Finance and Information Technology, and Minor in Economics, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a J.D. from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. Mr. Marrero is admitted to practice law in Puerto Rico and with the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit.
